Editing

I provide developmental editing services for either an hourly fee or a cents-per-word rate. Developmental editing refers to editing that aims to improve the content and structure of a manuscript. A developmental editor doesn’t check if the manuscript’s grammar, punctuation, and spelling are in accordance with rules codified in reference books such as the Chicago Manual of Style and The AP Stylebook, but instead takes on topics such as pacing, plot, characterization, and setting. Putting your book through developmental editing is not for the fainthearted. It can lead to major changes in a book. Characters can be merged, entire plots can be tossed out, settings can switch hemispheres, and so forth. But, in the end, it’s all worth it.

I offer four different developmental services:

Plotting:
Plotting a story is essential to writing in a way that is quick, relatively stress-free, and without major overhauls. I have written about my process of plotting here, and I can help you with yours! At the end of this process you will have:

  • A (working) title
  • A blurb
  • A summary of the book
  • A chapter-by-chapter summary of the book
  • Working character sketches and developmental arches for each (where applicable)

I charge an hourly rate for plotting, $ 40 ex. VAT. In general, it’s a process that takes an hour and a half per 10.000 planned words, so I charge $ 240,- to work with you on a plot for a 40.000 word novel, $ 480,- for 80.000 words, etc.

Editorial Championing:
This is developmental coaching, not so much developmental editing. Consider me a mentor as you write your story: I am there to read what you wrote and offer feedback in terms of plot and pacing, but also guide you in developing your writing by pointing out areas in your writing that could use improving. Think of telling issues, tense jumps, and POV violations. Note that I will only use your writing to point out enough instances to show you the trend. I won’t point out all instances. The goal is for you to become aware of the issue so you can fix it yourself. You will get:

  • Personal mentorship in developing your author voice
  • Chapter-to-chapter feedback on your pacing and plot
  • Feedback on your overall plot and development

My hourly rate, $ 40 ex. VAT, applies. In general, it’s a process that takes an hour per 10.000 words, so I charge $ 160,- to champion a 40.000 word novel, $ 320,- for 80.000 words, etc.

“Lite” developmental editing:
This service comes into play either when you get stuck in your story or once you’ve finished your first draft but feel it’s somehow “wonky.” In short: things are not the way you want them to be in your manuscript and you can’t figure out why. I’ll read what you have so far, and in case of a work in progress, I’ll talk to you about where it should be headed, then work with you on smoothing out the path to it by plotting onward from here or pointing out where the manuscript starts to wobble. I’ll also give you suggestions on how to change it with the plotline in mind that you’ve thought up. You will get:

  • Feedback on your overall plot and development
  • Chapter-to-chapter feedback on your pacing and plot
  • Personal coaching on how to continue or fix your manuscript

I charge $ 0.01 per word with a base rate of $ 50 for lite developmental editing. The cost to read and critique a 2000 word short is $ 70, $ 450 for a 40.000 word novella, $ 850 for an 80.000 word novel, and so on.

Full developmental editing:
I take a “helicopter” view of your entire piece of writing and give you a specific sense of what’s working, what’s not, and work with you to come up with solutions to the parts that aren’t flowing right. I might advice you to cut entire chapters or characters, and perhaps I might even advice you to rewrite half your book if that’s what would be best for the story. As I’ve said, developmental editing is not for the feignt of heart! Thankfully, a story rarely needs that kind of work. What tends to happen is that I riddle your manuscript with questions that the reader will be asking but for which you have not provided an (adequate) answer. This will help tighten your workd and improve your flow. Speaking of flow, I’ll tell you which parts can be cut, which need to be explanded and if there are obvious hiccups in anything else, I’ll let you know that too. It sounds like a painful process and it is, but I’ll make it as fun as possible. Consider it an opportunity to make your great work even greater! You will get:

  • Feedback on your overall plot and development
  • Chapter-to-chapter feedback on your pacing and plot
  • Plot hole plugging advice
  • Suggestions on how to tighten your work
  • Personal coaching on how to fix your manuscript

I charge $ 0.02 per word with a base rate of $ 50 for full developmental editing. The cost to read and critique a 2000 word short is $ 90, $ 850 for a 40.000 word novella, $ 1650 for an 80.000 word novel, and so on.
